Good Cheer Self-Sufficiency Society

Our name, the Good Cheer Self-Sufficiency Society (GCSSS) denotes a happy group of folks from various backgrounds who:
-share a common interest in eating well
-enjoy eating fresh and chemical free food
-are dedicated to sustainable practices in harmony with nature
-want control over their food supply
-dedicated to localizing resources (food, water, energy, skills)
All the while building community, sharing wisdom, knowledge and materials, and trading and bartering goods and services.

Our group is comprised of a range of people with various levels of experience: life-time gardeners, homesteaders, and small farmers, people breaking ground for the first time, and everything in between. Some of our attendees were born in Nova Scotia, others have lived here for 20 years or more, some 5 - 10 years, others less than 5 or for only a few months. Among our ranks are retired professors, scientists, entrepreneurs, interior designers, artists, career military service people, engineers, and publishing professionals. Some are young and still working at careers, others small-hold farmers making a living from the soil, several are retired and looking for a simple, natural lifestyle. The group is varied and dynamic--an organic group with a common purpose.
With a home base at the Lower Granville Hall in Port Royal, we meet monthly from October - April, with special meetings during the growing season. We explore topics related to: growing food, raising animals, food security, import replacement, green energy, and living well. Would you like to have more control of your food supply, power, and quality of life? This is the group for you. Let's build a stronger community and better life together.
Our future goals include: a community kitchen, life skills courses (small building construction, floor tiling, raised bed and trellis construction, setting up a water catchment system, planting trees, etc.) ; a resource library (books, tools, etc.); a demonstration garden for teaching how to grow food and to try innovative practices, a collective geothermal greenhouse.
